I’ve tried other therapists before but there wasn’t a lot of involvement and the connection and trust wasn’t there like it was at JourneyPure. Groups felt like family, lots of involvement. You never felt alone. They taught me a lot and made things easy to understand and to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and the knowledge I learned in just a few days.

From intake, to my group therapy sessions and my therapist and my coach, I was shown love, care and support. They provided me a judgment-free environment to be honest and vulnerable. I came into the program in absolute tatters and left with my head held high.

Called Journey pure at my lowest point and the very first day they helped me put myself back together with therapy and medication to help stay sober. From the lady answering the call on intake to the doctors and therapists, they all have your best interest in mind and are there to help and MAKE SURE you improve your quality of life with sobriety. I never thought I'd be 31 days sober but here I am and PROUD OF IT!

Franklin Clinic Questions & Answers

We can help you find answers.
1

What's the difference between outpatient and inpatient treatment?

With outpatient treatment, you live at your house or a sober living while you attend. With this freedom, you must navigate triggers and opportunities to use. The time commitment is around 9-10 hours per week.

With inpatient treatment, you live on campus. Removing access to drugs and alcohol ensures you stay sober for the first 4-6 weeks when both relapse and overdosing are most likely. The time commitment is 24/7 with around-the-clock care.

2

What is the life coaching component?

Your Life Coach will call you every week in the beginning and for a full year after. You can contact them any time you’re feeling triggered or need advice – even years later. They’ve been there before and know what it takes to stay on track.

The JourneyPure Alumni app is a great way to stay connected.

The app has:

  • Direct 24/7 text message connection to your dedicated life coach
  • Personalized reminders to reward you for making healthy choices (with points exchanged for real gift cards)
  • An 11-module self-help course with interactive journals for you to work through at your own pace
3

Does the Franklin program require homework?

No homework is required, but working on yourself and building healthy habits outside of sessions may just change your life.

Examples of things you can do outside of sessions to help:

  • Practicing healthy coping skills like meditation, journaling or hobbies regularly.
  • AA/NA meetings (since these are free resources available to you forever wherever you are).
  • Getting a sponsor to hold you accountable and eventually sponsoring others to build up your self-worth by helping others.
4

How do I know if I'm an alcoholic / addict or just depressed?

The majority of patients struggle with both addiction and depression at the same time. And, both issues must be treated to end the negative cycles.

You may explore with your therapist whether:

  • The depression came first and substances became a way to self-medicate.
  • The substances came first and feelings of helplessness or addiction-related consequences led to depression (like legal issues, family conflict, drug-induced trauma or guilt).

Unlike many other addiction therapy centers, the JourneyPure Franklin clinic is accredited and designed to treat both issues together.

Mom of Krista P.

When I made the first phone call, I had so many questions. I had no idea what to expect. I'd never been through anything like this before. They answered all my questions and even called me back to make sure that I didn't have any more questions.

They were willing to talk to me the entire way, the two hours I was driving to get there. They said, "We'll stay on the phone with you if we need to." I just felt special, honestly, at a time where I didn't feel special about myself and I really needed that in that moment.

After I did my research, I found that Journey Pure was highly recommended. So I made my call. They were so helpful, very compassionate. They told us what we needed to do exactly.

For everyone

Naltrexone (Vivitrol, Revia, Depade) is non-addictive. The medication blocks the positive effects of alcohol and drugs to discourage relapse, while also reducing cravings.

It can be started day 7-10 of sobriety and has no serious side effects. Because of cost, it's usually used for 1-12 months, but could be taken forever.

In shot form (Vivitrol), it’s administered once a month at the clinic, eliminating the option to skip or mistake the dose. If not covered by insurance Vivitrol is $1,000 per monthly shot, though they offer a savings card. The other options are Revia and Depade. These daily oral pills are around $100 a month.

Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) is a medication that has been studied recently for cravings. While research is ongoing, the takeaway is that Gabapentin is addictive and rarely the right choice.

For alcohol

While Naltrexone is usually the first choice, the following medications are also FDA-approved specifically for alcoholism:

  • Acamprosate (Campral) reduces symptoms of long-lasting withdrawal and cravings, such as insomnia, anxiety, restlessness and generally feeling unwell. It must be taken three times a day.
  • Disulfiram (Antabuse) interferes with the body’s ability to absorb alcohol. Instead of feeling “good”, alcohol will cause unpleasant reactions such as nausea and possibly be dangerous. Those who have shown the ability to stay sober for an extended period with recent relapse are ideal candidates.
  • Topiramate (Topamax, Qudexy) is an FDA-approved medication for seizures used “off label” to also reduce alcohol cravings due to initial promising research.

For opiates

In addition to Naltrexone, these medications are FDA-approved to treat heroin or pain pill addiction:

  • Buprenorphine + Naloxone (Suboxone) helps prevent withdrawal symptoms by replacing the effects of opiates with a lesser effect that does not produce a “high.” This is typically administered for 7-10 days or a longer maintenance program. This medication is addictive but poses a much lower risk.
  • Methadone (Dolophine, Methadose) is a more dangerous version of the above medication that is no longer recommended.

For underlying issues

All other physical and mental health issues (like depression and anxiety) need to be treated – whether they helped fuel the addiction in the first place or came as a result of the addiction.

Common mental health prescriptions include:

  • Fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem) or Bupropion (Wellbutrin) for depression
  • Aripiprazole (Abilify) for mood and bipolar
  • Trazodone (Oleptro) or Hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax) for sleep and anxiety
  • Paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva, Brisdelle) or Sertraline (Zoloft) for major depress, PTSD, OCD
  • Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) for mood stabilization
